Tentative Timeline
Note that all phases of student action begin with the letter "S" and all Phases of Teacher Action begin with the letter "T." Participating teachers are required to attend or listen to recorded teacher meetings weekly for the introduction and first four weeks of the project. Meetings last 45 minutes - 1 hour and are scheduled at a variety of times.
Computer needs at a school will vary and a lot of flexibility is given for teachers. Typically the greatest needs for the computer are during the Wiki Editing Phase (S3) where 2-3 times per week with Internet access for each student is preferred.
T1 - Teacher Information Phase
Teachers who apply are invited to an information meeting with all interested teachers approximately 4-6 weeks prior to the start of the next project. Teachers are still not committed at this point and the meeting is held in Elluminate and recorded. You may listen to past teacher information sessions in our meeting archive.

T2 - Project Announcement
Approximately five weeks prior to beginning the project, all classrooms are announced and teachers are requested to add school information, logos, and contact information to the main wiki for that project and information to the press release. If at any point prior to phase S2, the teacher does not communicate or respond, it may result in the school being dropped from the project. An engaged teacher or IT coordinator is required to make sure that all aspects of the project are established.
T3 - Teacher Handshake Phase
Four weeks prior to the project beginning, teachers are requested to join the various groups and tools that are used for the project. A project launch meeting is held. Parent letters and permission forms are sent home with students.
T4 - Project KICKOFF
The project begins and weekly teachers meetings are held for approximately the first 3-4 weeks of the project.
S1 - Student Handshake Phase (Pre-project)
Two weeks prior to the project launch, teachers are asked to join their students to the wiki and the Ning and may optionally assign an introductory post for their students based upon their course objectives. (it is helpful if a class has already learned the basic use of a wiki but it is not required.)
S2 - Student Introduction Phase
Students view a digital citizenship video of some kind (most classrooms use all or some of the PBS Growing Up Online series) or other alternative. Class discussions are held, and pre-project reflections occur as a blog post on the Ning.
S2b - Optional - PLN, Diigo Bookmarking Phase
More advanced classrooms or those with access to computers will join the Digiteen Diigo Bookmarking group to share bookmarks and learn how to assemble a Personal Learning Network (PLN) using the approved RSS reader for their school.
S3 - Wiki Editing Phase
Students are assigned to teams in which they research the current information on one of the nine aspects of digital citizenship as outlined in Mike Ribble and Gerald Bailey's book Digital Citizenship in Schools. Students edit a wiki with their international partners as they are taught how to collaborate with students who they are not interacting with on a real time or face to face basis. Understanding asychronous communications and the netiquette and citizenship involved is a valuable aspect of this phase.
S4 - Student Action Projects
Students return to brainstorm and work with their face to face classmates to create, plan, and carry out digital citizenship action projects at their local schools. These actions projects harness the power of the student network to help promote positive digital citizenship behaviors and affect the digital citizenship culture of schools and is closely related to the character education programs in many schools. Then this is completed, each student reflects on the Digiteen Ning and student groups create action wikis to document what they did at their school.
